The Institute for Natural Resources

In 2001, the Oregon Legislature established the Institute for Natural Resources (INR) to help link the knowledge and expertise of Oregon's universities to natural resource decision making. We are headquartered at Oregon State University and have offices at Portland State University.

Our mission is to provide access to integrated knowledge and information to inform natural resource decision-making and develop solutions in the context of sustainability. We help decision-makers identify and use relevant science in making natural resource policy and management decisions.

The Oregon Water Science Center (part of the US Geological Survey) provides reliable water data and interpretation of data to Federal, State, and local agencies, Tribes, and the public.

Our data and study results are widely used to manage Oregon's water resources for the benefit of people and our environment.

Our website is your gateway to a wealth of information on surface water, groundwater, and water quality in Oregon and the Nation.

Cambridge Energy Alliance (CEA) is a City of Cambridge program that promotes energy efficiency and solar energy.

Our goal is to help residents, businesses, and institutions in Cambridge save money while also reducing Cambridge’s carbon footprint.

Toward this goal, we promote the Mass Save program, a state-wide, utility-run program that offers significant incentives for a wide range of energy upgrades. We can also connect you to financial institutions that can help you pay for energy efficient improvements to your home or business.

The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Initiative is an international network of investors working together to put Principles for Responsible Investment into practice. Its goal is to understand the implications of sustainability for investors and support signatories to incorporate these issues into their investment decision making and ownership practices.

Food:Land:Opportunity is a multi-year initiative by Kinship Foundation and The Chicago Community Trust to create a resilient local food economy that protects and conserves land and other natural resources while promoting market innovation and building assets in Chicago-region communities.

While working mostly by invitation, the initiative has reserved funds to respond in real time to new opportunities that align with or support its strategies.

The initiative is focused on the supply side of producing food using sustainable practices. Defining characteristics include:

Openlands protects the natural and open spaces of northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region to ensure cleaner air and water, guard natural habitats and wildlife, and help balance and enrich our lives.

Our activities include helping communities become greener, advocating for open spaces, strengthening access to local foods, restoring native landscapes, using nature to unite communities and expanding our urban forest.

Conservation Florida excels at helping landowners understand the many conservation options, strategies and resources available for land protection.

We bring together diverse agencies to complete complex land deals and achieve common goals. We also have an excellent track record of obtaining funding from government programs, foundations and private donors to protect multi-million-dollar conservation projects. Our success stems from our professional team being creative, agile, and results-driven.

In January 2010, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach Counties united to form the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact as a way to coordinate mitigation and adaptation activities across county lines.

Since then, the four Compact counties have advanced local and regional responses to—and preparations for—the effects of climate change. They have expanded to work with a growing number of federal, state, regional, municipal, nonprofit, academic, and private sector partners.

EarthLinks is an innovative nonprofit in Denver that provides work programs for people who are homeless and low-income to learn new skills and create Earth-friendly products. Please support our program by visiting our online shop or volunteering.

We provide many opportunities to those in need, including gardening and eco-friendly production workshops, day trips into nature for the homeless, and writing and housing workshops.

Oregon Sustainable Agriculture Land Trust holds agricultural land in and near Portland for purposes of research and education on sustainable agriculture.

OSALT acts as an umbrella organization that provides land, management processes and non-profit status to local communities for sustainable food production through gardening, farming, research and education.

We now hold seven pieces of land in trust. Some are farms outside the city of Portland; some are community gardens in the city.
