Wildflower Center - inspiring conservation of native plants
At the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas, Austin, we inspire conservation of native plants through our gardens, research, education, consulting and outreach programs.
In doing so, we improve water quality, provide habitat for wildlife and enhance human health and happiness.
WHY NATIVE PLANTS MATTER
Native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and trees help conserve water, reduce mowing costs, provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife, protect the soil, and reduce use of fertilizers and pesticides.
North American native plants, defined as those that existed here without human introduction, are disappearing at an alarming rate due to human activities.
This loss of native plants has reduced wildlife habitat and the genetic diversity necessary for balanced ecosystems.
WHAT WE’RE DOING ABOUT IT
From collecting seeds to designing and installing green roofs, the Wildflower Center realizes its mission through ecological research, ecological design, landscape restoration, plant conservation, seed banking, citizen science and more.
The Center could not exist without the support of its volunteers. Every day volunteers help tend the gardens, support researchers, assist visitors, and answer gardening questions online.
