NeighborSpace, a land trust that stewards Chicago's community gardens
NeighborSpace is the only nonprofit urban land trust in Chicago that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of community groups. We provide this support through property ownership, insurance, stewardship, education, tool lending, project planning, fundraising support, troubleshooting and more — so that community groups can focus on gardening and their community-building vision.
We steward 109 community garden sites located in 33 wards across the City of Chicago, giving young and old alike an opportunity to get their hands in the earth and enjoy nature, right in their own neighborhoods.
The NeighborSpace land trust works to protect local sites by:
o Providing permanent protection against potential development
o Establishing local partnerships that ensure community management and control
o Covering basic liability insurance for gardeners and volunteers
o Developing resources and opportunities through the Stewardship Mini Grant Program
o Providing stewardship support, and technical assistance
