Making Art From (And Protecting) Miami's Coral: Coral Morphologic

Coral Morphologic is an art-science duo formed by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay in 2007. Our work is a mission to document, aquaculture, and protect Miami’s coral.

Our current objective is to develop a coral nursery along South Pointe Park in Miami Beach in partnership with local schools. This location presents a unique opportunity to grow, study, and transplant corals in a publicly accessible location.

Water probes will record important scientific data useful to students and scientists alike, such as sea level rise, acidification, and pollution. An underwater webcam will live-stream the tropical fish and marine life via the internet to reveal to the world unique and beautiful nature of Miami's urban coral reef ecosystem.

We are currently working with NOAA and Florida International University to understand how these unusually resilient urban ‘super corals’ are able to live successfully along the submerged edge of the highway connecting Miami to Miami Beach.

At Coral Morphologic, we believe that the coral pioneering onto the seawalls of Miami may hold the keys to understanding how reef organisms worldwide will adapt to human influence in the 21st century.
