Sustainable Solutions Lab (at UMass Boston)
With the goal of tackling the complexity of the intersection of climate and social equity to create resilient communities within a just, inclusive, and sustainable economy, the deans of five UMass schools launched the Sustainable Solutions Lab in 2015.
SSL acts as a convening force to bridge the worlds of academia, government, business, policy, science, and community to move key stakeholders toward action for greater resiliency. By ensuring that a wide variety of voices have a seat at the table, SSL supports the development of new ideas and creative strategies.
The work and research of SSL focus on the emerging field of climate justice. By informing and convening a network of diverse, committed, action-oriented leaders, including participants from communities that are often underrepresented, SSL is creating an engine of research and action to ensure that all Greater Boston residents are prepared equitably for the the impacts of climate change.
SSL helps identify best practices locally and globally, harnesses the intellectual capacity of other area universities and think tanks, supports the implementation of a climate-ready blueprint, and analyzes and evaluates results. By serving as a research and development lab for climate preparedness, SSL aids public agencies and community-based organizations in assessing climate vulnerabilities and developing adaptation plans.
