The Walls Vineyards

About the Business

The Walls is on a mission to show the world everything that Walla Walla Valley is capable of. Our distinctly American wines are simultaneously eclectic and classic. We value tradition and are meticulous in our winemaking, but we’re not afraid to embrace the creative freedom that comes with Washington’s unparalleled varietal diversity. Inspired by places and personalities throughout time, each of our wines has a story to tell, from pioneering American winegrowers to medieval knights, Einstein to Hemingway.

Stewardship

Stewardship is woven into everything we do at The Walls. It’s just the right thing to do when you love a place as much as we love the Walla Walla Valley. It’s also an ongoing journey. We’re constantly looking for new ways to treat our resources — environmental and human — with care and respect.

Solar

Yes, the Northwest is famous for its cloudy skies and rainy weather — but Walla Walla is different. We get almost 300 days of sunshine a year and about as much rain as the Gobi Desert. So solar just makes sense here. We installed solar panels at The Walls winery in 2016, and today they generate a substantial amount of our total energy use.

Packaging

Heavy glass bottles are one of the most carbon-intensive parts of the wine industry — and they don’t even make the wine taste better. We choose our packaging based on sustainability and carbon footprint, not ego. Most of our glass bottles are lightweight, and we have a robust keg program distributing our wines to restaurants near and far. We even package our Cruel Summer Rosé in a “double bagnum,” a super-high-quality pouch that holds the equivalent of four bottles of wine while using a fraction of the resources. Not only does it consume 80% less carbon than glass, it also travels happily in your cooler, camper, or canoe.

Our commitment to sustainability starts in the vineyards, and doubles down on packaging. Today, half of our production of Cruel Summer Rosé is packaged in the 3L “Double Bagnum,” which uses 80% less carbon than traditional glass bottles.

Agriculture

Stewardship is at the center of every viticultural decision we make. We use no herbicides and rely on the very least, lightest-impact treatments and fertilizers to keep our grapes, land, and workers healthy.

Labor practices

We want people to have careers at The Walls, not just jobs. We’re proud of the benefits we offer our staff, including health insurance, paid leave, and continuing education opportunities. We ask a lot of the people we work with; it’s only fair that we show them the same level of investment in return.
